WannaCry Ransomware : Before we start the topic let understand what is a Ransomware ? It’s is a type of program that blocks access to the victim’s data or threatens to publish or delete it until a ransom is paid so in short it is like kidnapping & asking for money. Yes you heard it right & medium for ransom used is Bit Coins.
How Ransomware work?
Ransomware encrypt all the files & folder from the victim’s computers & makes it impossible to read these encryption are very strong & almost impossible. this WannaCry has .WCRY to the end of the file name. It asks users to pay a US$300 ransom in bitcoins. theRansomware gives warning that the payment amount will be doubled after three days. If payment is not made in seven days they claims the encrypted files will be deleted.
Can anyone recover the encrypted files or shall pay the ransom?
The encryption is done on very high level hence to decryption of file is almost not possible & paying ransom is like trusting on bad guys we personally do not believe in giving ransom
How do i protect myself against ransomware?
– Always use Geniun Windows & Keep the system updated with latest updates by Microsoft
– Make sure Antivirus software is installed & updated every 2 days, also if possible scan the whole laptop or PC with Antivirus software once in a week.
– Do not open any emails coming from unknown sources or with attachment include .bat, .exe, .vbs etc
– Cloud is the best place to store files & folder always keep second backup copy of data files on Google Drive etc
If the device is already infected with WannaCry Ransomware do not plug any flash drive or portable drive & immediately do clean format of the computer or laptop.
Mac Users : There was not information on WannaCry Ransomware infection in macOS but yes Ransomware like crypto has hit the macOS before.
